Cologne Jazzweek: Kit Downes – SNAP II

Vor zweieinhalb Jahren realisierte der britische Pianist und Organist, Komponist und Bandleader Kit Downes für die „Reflex“-Konzertreihe im Amsterdamer Bimhuis die erste Folge seines Projekts „Dr. Snap“. Damals rief er dafür einige mit ihm befreundete Instrumentalist:innen aus Europa zusammen, um mit ihnen eine großformatige Improvisationsmusik zu inszenieren, die raffiniert zwischen ausgeschriebener Vorlage und einer frei im Flow gestalteten Musik changierte. Für die Cologne Jazzweek plant Downes, der in diesem Jahr „Featured Artist“ für das Festival ist, eine Fortsetzung als „Snap II“. Die Besetzung hat Downes im Vergleich zum Bimhuis-Projekt etwas verschlankt. Diesmal hat er einige namhafte Solist:innen um sein „Exhaust“-Trio mit der in Berlin lebenden, gebürtigen Argentinierin Camila Nebbia am Tenorsaxofon, seinem Landsmann Andrew Lisle am Schlagzeug und ihm an der Orgel gruppiert, zusammen stürzen sie sich wagemutig in einen reißenden Malstrom aus verdichteten Klangtrauben und fragmentierten Melodien, sirrenden Grooves und pulsierenden Rhythmen.

Two and a half years ago, British pianist, organist, composer and bandleader Kit Downes realised the first episode of his ‘Dr. Snap’ project for the ‘Reflex’ concert series at the Bimhuis in Amsterdam. Back then, he called together a number of instrumentalists from Europe who were friends of his to stage a large-scale improvisation with them, which cleverly alternated between a written-out template and free-flowing music. For Cologne Jazzweek, Downes, who is this year's ‘Featured Artist’ for the festival, is planning a sequel as ‘Snap II’. Compared to the Bimhuis project, Downes has slimmed down the line-up somewhat. This time, he has grouped some well-known soloists around his ‘Exhaust’ trio with the Berlin-based, Argentinian-born Camila Nebbia on tenor saxophone, his compatriot Andrew Lisle on drums and him on organ; together they boldly plunge into a torrential maelstrom of condensed sound clusters and fragmented melodies, buzzing grooves and pulsating rhythms.
