Kaum mehr als ein Katzensprung trennt die musikalisch florierenden Szenen Kölns und Amsterdams: zwei Städte, in denen die eigenständig frischen Stimmen von Fabian Dudek und Chaerin Im längst essenzieller Bestandteil sind. Den Saxophonisten und die Pianistin verbinden nicht nur die unersättliche Erforschung der akustischen Möglichkeiten ihrer Instrumente, sondern auch die neugierige Erweiterung ihres klanglichen Spektrums durch den Einsatz von Elektronik. Künstlerisch trafen Dudek und Im erstmals im Rahmen der Amsterdam Edition des Composers Collective Cologne aufeinander. Im Duo entwickeln die beiden Musiker:innen einen zeitgenössischen, ruhigen Klang, der von feinsinniger Interaktion getragen ist und nachzuhallen versteht.

Als special guest stö0t die Keyboarderin und Sängerin Isis Paola Giraldo aka Chiquita Magic dazu. Als sich das Quartett GEORGE um den Schlagzeuger John Hollenbeck gründete, war sie eine angenehme Überraschung im Line-up. Trotz ihrer Präsenz in diversen EDM-, Pop- und Techno-Szenen ist die im kolumbianischen Bogotá geborene, seit einer Weile im kanadischen Toronto lebende Musikerin, DJ und Produzentin aber gern gehörte Gästin etwa im Duo KNOWER von Genevieve Artadi und Louis Cole, die deren ästhetische Offenheit und stilistische Vielseitigkeit zu schätzen wissen. Auf dem Keyboard liebt sie es, bis in mikrotonale Bereiche vorzustoßen und den Raum zwischen den Tönen zum Schwingen zu bringen, was sie wiederum in Verbindung bringt mit dem drängenden Timbre ihrer Stimme. Ihre Musik lässt sich als Mashup hören: Die Cumbia Kolumbiens mischt sich mit Techno, Funk, Soul und HipHop. Dem nicht genug, hat sie 2025 ein frei improvisiertes „Solo Piano“-Album veröffentlich, das sie dem kanadischen Pianisten Paul Bley gewidmet hat.

Cologne and Amsterdam's thriving music scenes are just a stone's throw apart: two cities where the uniquely fresh voices of Fabian Dudek and Chaerin Im have long been an essential part of the scene. The saxophonist and the pianist are united not only by their insatiable exploration of the acoustic possibilities of their instruments, but also by their curious expansion of their sonic spectrum through the use of electronics. Artistically, Dudek and Im first met during the Amsterdam Edition of the Composers Collective Cologne. As a duo, the two musicians develop a contemporary, serene sound carried by subtle interaction and with a lingering resonance.

The LOFT in Cologne's Ehrenfeld district is exactly what its name suggests: a spacious loft on the top floor of a former perfume factory. Since 1989 it has been home to the city's musical avant-garde as well as a scene hub and a jazz laboratory for students.

Over those decades it has grown into a respected stage for improvised music, contemporary music, and jazz, with a reputation reaching well beyond Germany. Most of the Cologne jazz musicians who have made their mark nationally and internationally in the past thirty years took their first career steps here, among them Nils Wogram, Hayden Chisholm, Angelika Niescier, Frank Gratkowski, Robert Landfermann, Pablo Held, and Sebastian Sternal.

The Cologne Triennale, WDR, and Deutschlandfunk stage concerts and recordings at the LOFT, and the venue has been invited to the Moers Festival five times. Its own label, 2ndFloor, releases selected recordings, and more than 1,000 live and studio productions made in the LOFT studio have appeared on other labels. Supported by the association 2ndFloor e. V. and the collective jungesloft, it presents over 200 events a year.

Top-tier instruments – including a Steinway D grand, one of the finest concert pianos in any German jazz club – a professional recording studio with award-winning engineers, and the room's distinctive atmosphere have drawn many prominent guests, from Lee Konitz, Steve Lacy, and Peter Brötzmann to Kurt Rosenwinkel, Marilyn Crispell, and Jim Black. Still, the programming focus remains on supporting Cologne's own musicians.

Since 2009 the LOFT has received the NRW venue programming award every year, an honor that specifically recognizes work with emerging regional artists. In 2016 the British Guardian named it one of the ten best jazz clubs in Europe, and at the German Jazz Prize it was voted "Club/Venue of the Year" in 2021 and again in 2023 — a category decided not by the expert jury but directly by the more than 1,300 members of the German Jazz Union.
