The three musicians combine acoustic instruments with electronic sounds, extended playing techniques, and spontaneous interaction. Between soundscapes, rhythm, noise, and silence, they create music that evolves in the moment and deliberately transcends genre boundaries. Three musicians from the Cologne scene, each coming from different musical backgrounds, seek a common language that bridges improvisation, contemporary music, electronica, and noise.
Darius Heid, born in Aachen in 1999, is a Cologne-based composer, improviser, pianist, and sound artist. In his works, he explores resonance, focus, timbre, texture, and silence. His practice spans genres, moving fluidly between free improvisation, contemporary music, sound art, experimental electronic music, and noise. He is active in the Cologne and Copenhagen scenes with various projects of his own as well as in concert organizing. He explores the sonic possibilities of the piano and has developed a personal style that incorporates a nuanced repertoire of extended playing techniques and preparations. As a composer, Heid writes for contemporary music ensembles and for his own ensemble, Funkstille. His collaborations also extend to interdisciplinary projects with dancers as well as sound installations.
Anthony Greminger (b. 1994) is a German drummer, sound designer, and producer working in the genres of indie, electronica, and contemporary jazz. From 2012 to 2017, he studied at the HFMT Cologne and was a member of the Bundesjazzorchester in 2018–2019. In addition to the “Maika” project (nominated for Newcomer of the Year at the 2025 German Jazz Prize), where he currently serves as co-producer and drummer, he also performs live and works as a producer on the electronica project “Jump!”. With this project, he released his first EP in 2024, titled “Jump Out of Burning Cars,” together with Paris-based singer Thea Soti—a Shape+ nominee—and Cologne-based synth player Darius Heid. Somewhere in the realm of electronic music/experimental/industrial/deconstructed club. Live performances involve improvisation using pre-produced beats, vocals, and synths in a “club context” (including a 2025 tour of Indonesia featuring the Jogja Noise Bombing Festival). In 2024, he also developed and produced a drum-specific soundtrack for the German indie feature film “Baba Kush,” which won an award at the International Hof Film Festival.
Duy Luong was born in Hanoi and grew up in a family with deep roots in music. His early years were shaped by a classical guitar education before he switched to the bass—the instrument that would have a decisive influence on his future career. In 2014, he began studying jazz at the renowned Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen under the acclaimed bassists Robert Landfermann and Stefan Rademacher. There, Duy developed a versatile musical approach and mastered both the double bass and the electric bass. Since then, he has been active in numerous projects, including with Rønee, ZOUY, the Henning Neidhardt Trio, Luong/Neubauer/Liebhaber, LARIZA, Open Sound Control, Philipp Hayduk Kinetic, the Fe Fritschi Quartet, the Peter Materna Trio, and the Duy Luong Trio… His work spans jazz, electronic, and experimental music. As a composer and performer, he is in high demand both live and in the studio and has contributed to numerous albums and productions.
Venue:
LOFT
The LOFT in Cologne's Ehrenfeld district is exactly what its name suggests: a spacious loft on the top floor of a former perfume factory. Since 1989 it has been home to the city's musical avant-garde as well as a scene hub and a jazz laboratory for students.
Over those decades it has grown into a respected stage for improvised music, contemporary music, and jazz, with a reputation reaching well beyond Germany. Most of the Cologne jazz musicians who have made their mark nationally and internationally in the past thirty years took their first career steps here, among them Nils Wogram, Hayden Chisholm, Angelika Niescier, Frank Gratkowski, Robert Landfermann, Pablo Held, and Sebastian Sternal.
The Cologne Triennale, WDR, and Deutschlandfunk stage concerts and recordings at the LOFT, and the venue has been invited to the Moers Festival five times. Its own label, 2ndFloor, releases selected recordings, and more than 1,000 live and studio productions made in the LOFT studio have appeared on other labels. Supported by the association 2ndFloor e. V. and the collective jungesloft, it presents over 200 events a year.
Top-tier instruments – including a Steinway D grand, one of the finest concert pianos in any German jazz club – a professional recording studio with award-winning engineers, and the room's distinctive atmosphere have drawn many prominent guests, from Lee Konitz, Steve Lacy, and Peter Brötzmann to Kurt Rosenwinkel, Marilyn Crispell, and Jim Black. Still, the programming focus remains on supporting Cologne's own musicians.
Since 2009 the LOFT has received the NRW venue programming award every year, an honor that specifically recognizes work with emerging regional artists. In 2016 the British Guardian named it one of the ten best jazz clubs in Europe, and at the German Jazz Prize it was voted "Club/Venue of the Year" in 2021 and again in 2023 — a category decided not by the expert jury but directly by the more than 1,300 members of the German Jazz Union.
