Der deutsch-indische Pianist und Harmoniumspieler Jarry Singla und der indische Sarod-Virtuose Pratik Shrivastav öffnen Klangräume. Die Geschichte dieser außergewöhnlichen Zusammenarbeit begann in den vibrierenden Straßen von Mumbai, wo Jarry Singla sich 2013 für sechs Monate auf die musikalische Suche nach einem „third space“ begab – einem dritten Raum jenseits musikalischer Traditionen und vielbeschrittener „Fusion-Pfade“. Mit dem gefeierten Sarod-Virtuosen Pratik Shrivastav fand er einen kongenialen Partner. Was als musikalisches Experiment begann, hat sich zu einer tiefen künstlerischen Freundschaft entwickelt, die seit mehr als einem Jahrzehnt auf renommierten Bühnen wie dem Düsseldorf Festival, dem Sendesaal des Hessischen Rundfunks oder dem Lille Piano(s) Festival begeistert.

Dort ein in der nordindischen Tradition tief verwurzelter, innovativer Klangforscher, der die Gabe besitzt „out-of-the-box“ zu denken und den silbrig-singenden Ton seiner Sarod in völlig neue Kontexte stellt. Ein Klavier, das hypnotische Teppiche aus Rhythmus und Melodie webt. Eine Sarod, die die meditative Tiefe indischer Ragas transzendiert. Zwei Stimmen, die eine gemeinsame Geschichte erzählen – mal introspektiv und schwebend, mal rhythmisch komplex und mitreißend. German-Indian pianist and harmonium player Jarry Singla and Indian sarod virtuoso Pratik Shrivastav open up new sonic spaces. The story of this extraordinary collaboration began in the vibrant streets of Mumbai, where Jarry Singla embarked on a six-month musical quest in 2013 in search of a “third space”—a realm beyond musical traditions and well-trodden “fusion paths.” In the acclaimed sarod virtuoso Pratik Shrivastav, he found a kindred spirit. What began as a musical experiment has evolved into a deep artistic friendship that has been delighting audiences for more than a decade on renowned stages such as the Düsseldorf Festival, the Hessischer Rundfunk Sendesaal, and the Lille Piano(s) Festival. As early as 2017, the Neue Zürcher Zeitung recognized what makes this collaboration so special: “What is taking place here is an encounter … that means far more than the respectful bow with which sitar virtuoso Ravi Shankar and violinist Yehudi Menuhin sent a—at the time, significant!—message of understanding. Here, it’s not just a matter of exchanging pleasantries. It’s about something alive. With THE THIRD SPACE, Jarry Singla and Pratik Shrivastav now present themselves as a duo for the first time. On one hand, a piano virtuoso and cultural bridge-builder who challenges musical conventions and reimagines musical boundaries. On the other, an innovative sound explorer deeply rooted in the North Indian tradition, who possesses the gift of thinking “outside the box” and places the silvery, singing tone of his sarod in entirely new contexts. A piano that weaves hypnotic tapestries of rhythm and melody. A sarod that transcends the meditative depth of Indian ragas. Two voices telling a shared story—at times introspective and ethereal, at other times rhythmically complex and captivating. THE THIRD SPACE invites us to understand music as a universal language that transcends boundaries.

The LOFT in Cologne's Ehrenfeld district is exactly what its name suggests: a spacious loft on the top floor of a former perfume factory. Since 1989 it has been home to the city's musical avant-garde as well as a scene hub and a jazz laboratory for students.

Over those decades it has grown into a respected stage for improvised music, contemporary music, and jazz, with a reputation reaching well beyond Germany. Most of the Cologne jazz musicians who have made their mark nationally and internationally in the past thirty years took their first career steps here, among them Nils Wogram, Hayden Chisholm, Angelika Niescier, Frank Gratkowski, Robert Landfermann, Pablo Held, and Sebastian Sternal.

The Cologne Triennale, WDR, and Deutschlandfunk stage concerts and recordings at the LOFT, and the venue has been invited to the Moers Festival five times. Its own label, 2ndFloor, releases selected recordings, and more than 1,000 live and studio productions made in the LOFT studio have appeared on other labels. Supported by the association 2ndFloor e. V. and the collective jungesloft, it presents over 200 events a year.

Top-tier instruments – including a Steinway D grand, one of the finest concert pianos in any German jazz club – a professional recording studio with award-winning engineers, and the room's distinctive atmosphere have drawn many prominent guests, from Lee Konitz, Steve Lacy, and Peter Brötzmann to Kurt Rosenwinkel, Marilyn Crispell, and Jim Black. Still, the programming focus remains on supporting Cologne's own musicians.

Since 2009 the LOFT has received the NRW venue programming award every year, an honor that specifically recognizes work with emerging regional artists. In 2016 the British Guardian named it one of the ten best jazz clubs in Europe, and at the German Jazz Prize it was voted "Club/Venue of the Year" in 2021 and again in 2023 — a category decided not by the expert jury but directly by the more than 1,300 members of the German Jazz Union.
