Jazz at JAKI: Marc Doffey Quartett

With “Illusion”, Cologne-based bandleader, saxophonist, and composer Marc Doffey presents his new album. Together with an outstanding quartet, he brings his own melody-driven compositions to the stage—works that are deeply rooted in the jazz tradition while leaving plenty of room for spontaneous interaction.

At the heart of the music are those fleeting moments in which inner feelings coalesce into images, moods, and associations. “Illusion” describes the attempt to convey such inner movements outwardly and make them musically tangible. The compositions serve as the starting point for an energetic interplay in which individual expressiveness, years of musical experience, and the musicians’ immediate joy of playing come together.

The music moves between melodic clarity and improvisational openness, with the interplay of composition and spontaneous interaction continually giving rise to new and unexpected soundscapes.
