Mit ihrem neuen Album Em Julho nehmen die Sängerin Elsa Johanna Mohr und der Gitarrist Flávio Nunes ihr Publikum erneut mit auf eine musikalische Reise nach Brasilien. Die Aufnahmen entstanden im August 2025 und versammeln eine lebendige Mischung aus Klassikern der brasilianischen Musik und eigenen Kompositionen.

Stücke wie Água de Coco von Marcos Valle oder Tico-Tico no Fubá von Zequinha de Abreu treffen auf Songs von Künstler*innen wie Milton Nascimento oder Djavan. Darunter mischen sich Eigenkompositionen der Sängerin, etwa das Stück Beijo da Lua (dt. Kuss vom Mond), in dem von der besonderen Magie und Energie Brasiliens die Rede ist oder Jaguar in dem Mohr filigran auch die deutsche Sprache einarbeitet und das Erinnerungen an ihre Brasilienaufenthalte metaphorisch einfließen lässt. Die beiden Musiker*innen spielen seit sieben Jahren zusammen. Sie verbindet eine gemeinsame musikalische Sprache, mit der sie die brasilianische Lebenslust und die altbekannte Sehnsucht der Brasilianer*innen zum Ausdruck bringen möchten. Nach ihrem Debütalbum Passadinha, das 2023 im Rahmen der Reihe Jazz Thing Next Generation erschien, führen sie diese Zusammenarbeit auf Em Julho (Release: Juli 2026, Challenge Records) konsequent weiter – intim, warm und voller Lebensfreude. With their new album Em Julho, singer Elsa Johanna Mohr and guitarist Flávio Nunes once again take their audience on a musical journey to Brazil. Recorded in August 2025, the album brings together a vibrant mix of Brazilian music classics and original compositions.

Pieces such as Água de Coco by Marcos Valle or Tico-Tico no Fubá by Zequinha de Abreu meet songs by artists such as Milton Nascimento or Djavan. Interspersed among these are original compositions by the singer, including Beijo da Lua (Engl. Kiss of the Moon), which speaks of the special magic and energy of Brazil, and Jaguar, in which Mohr delicately incorporates the German language, weaving in memories of her time in Brazil through metaphor. The two musicians have been playing together for seven years. They share a common musical language with which they aim to express the Brazilian joie de vivre and the well-known longing — the saudade — of Brazilians. Following their debut album "Passadinha", released in 2023 as part of the Jazz Thing Next Generation series, they continue this collaboration on Em Julho (release: July 2026, Challenge Records) with consistency — intimate, warm and full of zest for life. The title stands for a feeling: a musical summer that can be listened to at any time, one that pushes everyday worries into the background for a moment — light, sunny and full of longing for the sea, warmth and distant shores.

The LOFT in Cologne's Ehrenfeld district is exactly what its name suggests: a spacious loft on the top floor of a former perfume factory. Since 1989 it has been home to the city's musical avant-garde as well as a scene hub and a jazz laboratory for students.

Over those decades it has grown into a respected stage for improvised music, contemporary music, and jazz, with a reputation reaching well beyond Germany. Most of the Cologne jazz musicians who have made their mark nationally and internationally in the past thirty years took their first career steps here, among them Nils Wogram, Hayden Chisholm, Angelika Niescier, Frank Gratkowski, Robert Landfermann, Pablo Held, and Sebastian Sternal.

The Cologne Triennale, WDR, and Deutschlandfunk stage concerts and recordings at the LOFT, and the venue has been invited to the Moers Festival five times. Its own label, 2ndFloor, releases selected recordings, and more than 1,000 live and studio productions made in the LOFT studio have appeared on other labels. Supported by the association 2ndFloor e. V. and the collective jungesloft, it presents over 200 events a year.

Top-tier instruments – including a Steinway D grand, one of the finest concert pianos in any German jazz club – a professional recording studio with award-winning engineers, and the room's distinctive atmosphere have drawn many prominent guests, from Lee Konitz, Steve Lacy, and Peter Brötzmann to Kurt Rosenwinkel, Marilyn Crispell, and Jim Black. Still, the programming focus remains on supporting Cologne's own musicians.

Since 2009 the LOFT has received the NRW venue programming award every year, an honor that specifically recognizes work with emerging regional artists. In 2016 the British Guardian named it one of the ten best jazz clubs in Europe, and at the German Jazz Prize it was voted "Club/Venue of the Year" in 2021 and again in 2023 — a category decided not by the expert jury but directly by the more than 1,300 members of the German Jazz Union.
