“Not only does he create meticulously crafted improvisations that sound as if they were composed, but he also develops well-thought-out projects in which the concept never overshadows the emotional substance.” The New York Times

Winner of the prestigious 2019 Prix du Musicien européen from the Académie du Jazz in Paris and the 2021 Downbeat Magazine Critics Poll (Rising Star Trombone), Samuel Blaser is redefining what it means to be a trombonist in today’s musical landscape. Born in 1981 in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, this dynamic artist burst onto the professional scene after graduating from conservatory in 2002, quickly making waves across continents.

During his formative years, Blaser forged powerful connections with the Vienna Art Orchestra and the European Radio Big Band, earned a coveted Fulbright Scholarship, and pursued graduate studies at Purchase College Conservatory of Music in New York. His debut album as a leader, the Samuel Blaser Quartet’s 7th Heaven (Between The Lines), marked the beginning of an extraordinary journey. After 16 transformative years living between New York and Berlin, absorbing the pulse of two of the world’s most vibrant music scenes, he returned to his Swiss roots in December 2021, bringing with him a wealth of international experience. A Musical Alchemist

The secret to Blaser’s magnetic artistry lies in his fearless embrace of musical diversity. Raised on a rich diet of classical music, Swiss folk traditions, and jazz, he has evolved into a genre-bending innovator who fearlessly explores operatic grandeur, rock intensity, and blues authenticity. His musical philosophy centers on growth through collaboration, leading him to forge meaningful relationships with legendary figures including Pierre Favre, Michel Portal, Gerry Hemingway, Marc Ducret, Paul Motian, Oliver Lake, Wallace Roney, Russ Lossing, and Daniel Humair - each master contributing to his evolving artistic identity.

Blaser wields his trombone like a sonic chameleon, seamlessly transitioning from liquid melodic passages to explosive rhythmic punctuations, from earthy gut-level expressions to otherworldly sound explorations - all delivered with laser-focused intentionality. Whether leading his own ensembles or collaborating with others, he approaches each musical encounter with strategic vision and intuitive understanding of what the moment demands. His solo performances are particularly electrifying, using his bold, commanding sound to unlock the hidden musical potential of both architectural spaces and natural environments.

Rosina is the Samuel Blaser Quartet's most personal record to date. Named after Samuel's grandmother - a woman who joined the Italian Maquis resistance during WWII, crossed the border into Switzerland after the war, built a life, raised six daughters, and left a mark on everyone she touched - the album is a meditation on memory, gratitude, and the lives that quietly shape our own.

With Russ Lossing on piano, Masa Kamaguchi on bass, and Billy Mintz on drums, Blaser leads a group of deep listeners through music that is lyrical and searching, never sentimental. Rosina is a love letter across time - to a woman Samuel never met, but has always known.

Venue:

LOFT

The LOFT in Cologne's Ehrenfeld district is exactly what its name suggests: a spacious loft on the top floor of a former perfume factory. Since 1989 it has been home to the city's musical avant-garde as well as a scene hub and a jazz laboratory for students.

Over those decades it has grown into a respected stage for improvised music, contemporary music, and jazz, with a reputation reaching well beyond Germany. Most of the Cologne jazz musicians who have made their mark nationally and internationally in the past thirty years took their first career steps here, among them Nils Wogram, Hayden Chisholm, Angelika Niescier, Frank Gratkowski, Robert Landfermann, Pablo Held, and Sebastian Sternal.

The Cologne Triennale, WDR, and Deutschlandfunk stage concerts and recordings at the LOFT, and the venue has been invited to the Moers Festival five times. Its own label, 2ndFloor, releases selected recordings, and more than 1,000 live and studio productions made in the LOFT studio have appeared on other labels. Supported by the association 2ndFloor e. V. and the collective jungesloft, it presents over 200 events a year.

Top-tier instruments – including a Steinway D grand, one of the finest concert pianos in any German jazz club – a professional recording studio with award-winning engineers, and the room's distinctive atmosphere have drawn many prominent guests, from Lee Konitz, Steve Lacy, and Peter Brötzmann to Kurt Rosenwinkel, Marilyn Crispell, and Jim Black. Still, the programming focus remains on supporting Cologne's own musicians.

Since 2009 the LOFT has received the NRW venue programming award every year, an honor that specifically recognizes work with emerging regional artists. In 2016 the British Guardian named it one of the ten best jazz clubs in Europe, and at the German Jazz Prize it was voted "Club/Venue of the Year" in 2021 and again in 2023 — a category decided not by the expert jury but directly by the more than 1,300 members of the German Jazz Union.
