Huddersfiels Contemporary Music Festival 2016:
…radically inventive music came courtesy of saxophonist John Butcher and Trio Kimmig–Studer– Zimmerlin. The skill and subtlety displayed in this concert was, frankly, amazing, with a recurring sense of “how did we get here?” due to the incredibly organic way they gently massaged and manoeuvred musical sounds and materials. Even when focussing more intently on moment-by-moment events, it was still hard to pinpoint exactly where things began to shift and evolve. Anyone with doubts concerning the veracity of improvisation in comparison to pre-composed music would have had them instantly dispelled. It was a real privilege to see four musicians in such complete control of their instruments, displaying utmost technical and compositional maturity yet with an omnipresent sense of play.…

…Harald Kimmig, Daniel Studer, Alfred Zimmerlin and John Butcher. This powerful chamber ensemble with its incredible drive and a congenial combination of strings and saxophone was responsible for many of the highlights of the Konfrontationen Festival 2015…
Freistil Nr. 62, 2015
The Trio Kimmig-Studer-Zimmerlin – augmented here by saxophonist John Butcher – left a particularly lasting impression. The group delivered a wild – at times threatening – performance. The musicians frequently abandoned the classical realm, with the cello and violin often serving as a rhythm section, while the double bass assumed a role as a solo instrument. The playing techniques were also extended. The strings were bowed, pulled, struck and scratched – the entire instrument, from neck to tailpiece, was used as a resonating body. John Butcher complemented the trio perfectly. As a master of circular breathing and overblowing techniques, he managed to elicit tones that sounded as if they had been made by a woodwind instrument, which sometimes had listeners asking themselves which instrument was responsible for a particular sound.

At this year's “Konfrontationen” in Nickelsdorf, Butcher played together with the string trio consisting of Harald Kimmig (violin), Alfred Zimmerlin (cello) and Daniel Studer (double bass). He blended effortlessly into the group sound and elicited tones from his woodwind instruments that repeatedly left the listener wondering which of the four instruments was responsible for which sound. A successful collaboration that was spontaneous and perhaps that is why it worked so well.
