Das arabische Wort MAJÄL ( ل ), sprich [maʒaːl] bedeutet Bereich, Raum oder Möglichkeit, je nach Kontext.
Der Klang der arabischen Laute ist prägend für die Musik von MAJÄL. Oudvirtuose Fadhel Boubaker (Tunis) entlockt seinem Instrument verschiedenste Klangfarben, zusammen mit E-Gitarre und Percussion entsteht ein filigranes Geflecht aus bewegter Rhythmik, starken Melodien und Jazzharmonik. Immer wieder wechseln die drei Musiker die Rollen und improvisieren inner- oder auch mal außerhalb ihrer Kompositionen – es entsteht eine ausdrucksstarke Musik, die sich von Jazz über Rock bis hin zu imaginärer Folklore bewegt, stets mit Einflüssen arabischer Maqam-Musik.

Fadhel Boubaker: Wenn der tunesische Oud virtuose Jazzharmonien, komplexe Rhythmen und zeitgenössischen Jazzunter dem Einfluss arabischen Maqams spielt, verschmilzt eine Jahrtausende alte Musiktraditionmit der Musik unserer Gegenwart.

Matthias Kurth: Die Jazzgitarre mit einer Vorliebe für Ambient Sounds und Rock-Energie wird vom Kölner Gitarristen Matthias Kurth gespielt. Mithilfe von Effektpedalen füllt er den Raum zudem mit tiefen Bassnoten und synthieartigen Klängen.

Konrad Wiemann: Komplett wird die Band durch einen Berliner in Freiburg. Konrad spielt Perkussionsinstrumente aus aller Welt und Live-Elektronik auf die tanzbarste und zugleich entspannendste Art überhaupt.



Die Konzerte im LOFT beginnen in der Regel gegen 20 Uhr - das LOFT öffnet jeweils um 19.30 Uhr.
Ausnahmen in der Winterzeit - zB an Sonntagen - sind möglich.

The Arabic word MAJÄL ( ل ), pronounced [maʒaːl], means area, space, or possibility, depending on the context.

The sound of the Arabic lute is characteristic of MAJÄL’s music. Oud virtuoso Fadhel Boubaker (Tunis) elicits a wide variety of timbres from his instrument, which, together with electric guitar and percussion, creates a delicate interweaving of lively rhythms, strong melodies, and jazz harmonies. The three musicians constantly switch roles and improvise within and sometimes outside their compositions, creating expressive music that ranges from jazz to rock to imaginary folklore, always with influences from Arabic maqam music.

The musicians of MAJÄL have already played at many festivals in other constellations, including: Taichung Jazz Festival, Jazzfest Berlin, Leverkusener Jazztage, International Jazz Festival Viersen, Jazztage Leipzig, Traumzeit Festival Duisburg, Heidelberger Frühling, Enjoy Jazz, Ariano Folk Festival, FIH (Festival International de Hammamet), JMC (journées musicales de Carthage), Manarat.

Fadhel Boubaker: When the Tunisian oud virtuoso plays jazz harmonies, complex rhythms, and contemporary jazz influenced by Arabic maqam, a millennia-old musical tradition merges with the music of our present.

Matthias Kurth: The jazz guitar, with a penchant for ambient sounds and rock energy, is played by Cologne-based guitarist Matthias Kurth. With the help of effects pedals, he also fills the room with deep bass notes and synth-like sounds.

Konrad Wiemann: The band is completed by a Berliner in Freiburg. Konrad plays percussion instruments from all over the world and live electronics in the most danceable and at the same time most relaxing way possible.




The concerts at the LOFT will generally start at around 8.00 pm CEST - the LOFT will open at 7.30 pm CEST.
Exceptions during wintertime - eg on Sundays - are possible.
