SCHMID’s HUHN: „eine der interessantesten Bands der Jazzmetropole Köln“ (Jazzpodium) hat in den vergangenen Jahren einen ganz eigenen Bandsound kultiviert, der sich vielschichtig mit der Verbindung von freier Improvisation und Komposition auseinandersetzt. Nach ihrer Debüt-LP 2014 und Golden Spheres (2018) folgte 2022 das Live-Album Layers (live). An fünf aufeinanderfolgenden Abenden trat die Band um die beiden Saxophonisten Stefan Karl Schmid und Leonhard Huhn im Kölner Traditionsclub Subway auf. Die in den Monaten zuvor begangene, musikalische Isolation macht sich hierbei auf beeindruckende Weise Luft und wirkt wie ein Befreiungsschlag als Eintritt in eine neue Schaffensperiode.
Stilistisch eklektisch, aber klanglich kohärent und mit einer breiten Palette von Klangfarben, produziert die Band Musik von höchst intuitivem Zusammenspiel und virtuoser Individualität. Schmid’s Huhn schöpft aus den unterschiedlichen Hintergründen und Einflüssen der umtriebigen Bandmitglieder und kombiniert Post-Bop, Cool-Jazz, Chromatik des 20. Jahrhunderts, Avantgarde-Jazz, Post-Punk und erstmals auch elektronische Klänge zu einer Art verrücktem, akustischem Gebräu. Die Kompositionen sind durchdacht, zugleich düster und voller Energie. Schmid’s Huhn erschafft mit Layers (live) einen eigensinnigen, vielschichtigen Jazz, der respektvoll zurückblickt und gleichzeitig mit großer Entschlossenheit nach Zukünftigem greift.

Schmid’s Huhn ist in den letzten Jahren durch etliche Wettbewerbe und Auftritte in Erscheinung getreten, u.a. durch den Gewinn des Kompositions- und Solistenpreises beim Tremplin Jazzfestival in Avignon (FR) oder die mehrfachen Nominierungen für den Neuen Deutschen Jazzpreis. Huhn und Schmid sind außerdem beide Förderpreisträger der Stadt Köln.

Der Deutsch-Isländer Stefan Karl Schmid (*1984) ist von seiner Wahlheimat Köln aus als Saxophonist und Komponist national und international tätig. Er studierte als Fulbright Stipendiat an der Manhattan School of Music in New York. Seinen Master of Music im Fach Jazz-Komposition erhielt er 2010 an der HfMT Köln. Zuvor absolvierte er ein musikpädagogisches und künstlerisches Studium an der HfM Nürnberg im Fach Jazzsaxophon, welche er jeweils mit Auszeichnung abschloss. Schmid leitet seine eigenen Projekte (Pyjama, Niaque, SJO\CGN), ist gefragter Sideman (u.a. Shannon Barnett Quartett, Reza Askari ROAR, Michel Reis Quartet) und war Mitglied des Bundesjazzorchesters. Mit all diesen Formationen bereiste er zahlreiche Länder und gastierte auf renommierten Konzertbühnen und Festivals. Schmid hat u.a. mit Michael Abene, Darcy James Argue, Theo Bleckmann, Till Brönner, John Hollenbeck, Kristjan Järvi, Joe Lovano, Ack Van Rooyen, der HR und WDR Big Band zusammengearbeitet. Als Professor für Jazz-Saxophon und Ensemble ist er derzeit an der Staatlichen Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Mannheim tätig.
Neben einer Reihe von Auszeichnungen als Komponist und Saxophonist erhielt Schmid 2013 den Kompositionspreis des Bundesjazzorchesters, das Förderstipendium der Stadt Köln sowie den Jazzpreis der Stadt Worms. Des weiteren wurde Schmid mit dem Solistenpreis des ‚Européen Tremplin Jazz D’Avignon Contest 2014’ in Frankreich ausgezeichnet.

Leonhard Huhn (*1986) arbeitet im Bereich Jazz, improvisierte Musik und der Neuen Musik. Von 2006 – 2011 studierte er Saxophon an der Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln bei Frank Gratkowski. 2011 veröffentlichte er im Duo mit dem Bassisten Sebastian Gramss die CD „Far East Suite“. Als Stipendiat reiste er mit dem Trio CEL zum Palazzo Ricci nach Montepulciano (Italien). Seit 2012 veranstaltet er mit dem Trio CEL die Konzertreihe CELling für improvisierte Musik. Er ist in Ensembles wie dem Multiple Joyce Orchestra oder dem Polychrome Orchestra für zeitgenössische Musik und Improvisation tätig, ebenso als Theatermusiker und Instrumentallehrer. Er trat auf internationalen Festivals wie dem Langnau Jazz Nights, Burghausen Jazzfestival, Achtbrücken Musik Köln u.a. auf. Geboren in Heppenheim und aufgewachsen in Konstanz, studierte Stefan Schönegg (*1986) klassischen Kontrabass und Jazz-Bass an den Musikhochschulen in Köln und Berlin. Derzeit lebt und arbeitet er in Köln und ist in den Grenzbereichen zwischen Improvisierter Musik, Jazz, Klassik und Avantgarde umtriebiger Bestandteil der Szene. Fabian Arends (*1990) lebt als Schlagzeuger und Komponist in Köln. Der Deutschlandfunk betitelt Arends mehrfach als „Shootingstar der deutschen Jazzszene“. Er gibt weltweite Konzerte und Workshops mit zahlreichen Ensembles und arbeitete innerhalb der letzten Jahre mit Musikern wie Lee Konitz, Thomas Morgan, Larry Goldings, Jacob Anderskov, Kasper Tranberg, Sebastian Gille, Simon Nabatov, Pablo Held, Robert Landfermann, Thomas Rückert u.a. Im Jahr 2017 wurde Arends für sein Album Levitate (Klaeng Records) für den Echo Jazz nominiert. Diesem folgten mit Fosterchild (Tangible Music/2019) und Fosterchild – Dear Earthling (ILK/2019) zwei Veröffentlichungen seiner neuesten Band. Neben seinen eigenen Bands arbeitet Arends in Lucas Leidingers Aurora Trio, Reza Askari ́s Roar, Jason Seizers Cinema Paradiso Quartett, dem Fabian Dudek Quartett oder im Duo mit David Helm. Mittlerweile erweitert Arends sein Soundspektrum vermehrt durch elektronische Klänge, hier konzentriert sich seine Arbeit vor allem auf analoge, modulare Synthesizer. Im Jahr 2018 war er Stipendiat der Kunststiftung Baden-Württemberg. Fabian Arends lehrt seit 2016 Schlagzeug und Improvisation an der Staatlichen Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Stuttgart.

SCHMID’s HUHN, “one of the most interesting bands in the jazz metropolis of Cologne” (Jazzpodium), has cultivated its own unique sound in recent years, which deals with the connection between free improvisation and composition in a multi-layered way. Following their debut LP in 2014 and Golden Spheres (2018), the live album Layers (live) followed in 2022. The band, led by saxophonists Stefan Karl Schmid and Leonhard Huhn, performed on five consecutive evenings at Cologne’s legendary Subway club. The musical isolation experienced in the months prior to this is impressively vented here and seems like a liberating blow as the band enters a new creative period.
Stylistically eclectic, yet sonically coherent and with a wide range of timbres, the band produces music of highly intuitive interplay and virtuoso individuality. Schmid’s Huhn draws on the diverse backgrounds and influences of its energetic band members, combining post-bop, cool jazz, 20th-century chromaticism, avant-garde jazz, post-punk, and, for the first time, electronic sounds into a kind of crazy acoustic brew. The compositions are well thought-out, at once dark and full of energy. With Layers (live), Schmid’s Huhn creates a headstrong, multi-layered jazz that looks back respectfully while reaching toward the future with great determination.

Schmid’s Huhn has made a name for itself in recent years through numerous competitions and performances, including winning the composition and soloist prize at the Tremplin Jazz Festival in Avignon (FR) and multiple nominations for the New German Jazz Prize. Huhn and Schmid are also both recipients of the City of Cologne’s sponsorship award.

German-Icelandic Stefan Karl Schmid (*1984) is a saxophonist and composer based in Cologne, Germany, where he works both nationally and internationally. He studied at the Manhattan School of Music in New York on a Fulbright scholarship. He received his Master of Music in jazz composition from the Cologne University of Music and Dance in 2010. Prior to that, he completed a degree in music education and arts at the HfM Nuremberg in jazz saxophone, graduating with honors in both subjects. Schmid leads his own projects (Pyjama, Niaque, SJO\CGN), is a sought-after sideman (including Shannon Barnett Quartet, Reza Askari ROAR, Michel Reis Quartet) and was a member of the German National Youth Jazz Orchestra. With all these formations, he has toured numerous countries and performed at renowned concert venues and festivals. Schmid has worked with Michael Abene, Darcy James Argue, Theo Bleckmann, Till Brönner, John Hollenbeck, Kristjan Järvi, Joe Lovano, Ack Van Rooyen, the HR and WDR Big Bands, among others. Leonhard Huhn (born 1986) works in the fields of jazz, improvised music, and contemporary music. From 2006 to 2011, he studied saxophone at the Cologne University of Music and Dance with Frank Gratkowski. In 2011, he released the CD Far East Suite in a duo with bassist Sebastian Gramss. As a scholarship holder, he traveled with the Trio CEL to the Palazzo Ricci in Montepulciano (Italy). Since 2012, he has been organizing the CELling concert series for improvised music with the Trio CEL. He performs in ensembles such as the Multiple Joyce Orchestra and the Polychrome Orchestra for contemporary music and improvisation, as well as working as a theater musician and instrumental teacher.
