Constantin Krahmer Septett

Nach 15 Jahren in Köln ist der Pianist und Komponist Constantin Krahmer im November 2021 nach Rostock gezogen. Dort hat er einen Lehrauftrag für Klavier an der HMT und hat die internationale Konzertreihe Bron aufgebaut, in deren Rahmen er Musiker*innen für Konzerte mit ihm nach Rostock einlädt (z.B. Thomas Morgan, Peter Bruun, Zola Mennenöh, Luise Volkmann, Carlos Bica u.v.m.) Darüber hinaus ist er ein sehr aktiver Sideman (Maik Krahl Quartett, Ampair:e, Zuzana Leharova Quartett, Radius, etc.) und schreibt Musik für eigene Ensembles: nach dem im Februar 2022 erschienenen Album Close Up erscheint in diesem Jahr sein Trio-Debütalbum mit Thomas Morgan (Bass) und Leif Berger (Schlagzeug), aufgenommen im Juni 2021 im LOFT.

Das Constantin Krahmer Septett ist sein aktuelles Projekt, mit dem er an den Tagen nach dem Konzert ein Album aufnimmt und über das er Folgendes sagt:

”Bislang habe ich immer für kleinere Bands geschrieben, Trio, Quartett, Quintett, aber irgendwie hat es mich schon länger gereizt mal für ein mittelgroßes Ensemble zu komponieren. Irgendwas was noch kein ”Large Ensemble“ oder eine kleinere Bigband ist, sondern wo alle Musiker*innen noch in hohem Grad die Musik mitbestimmen können ohne dass es unübersichtlich wird.
Da ist das Septett eine sehr gute Wahl: Vier Blasinstrumente z.B. können gemeinsam tolle Farben und Texturen kreieren, gleichzeitig ist die Besetzung noch überschau- bzw. ”überhör“-bar, man hat noch den Überblick und kann spontan reagieren. Und das ist mir sehr wichtig: Ich möchte meinen Mitmusiker*innen die maximale Freiheit geben, meine Kompositionen sollen wie ein Reservoir an Notentext, an Melodien, mehrstimmigen Passagen, Ideen, etc. sein, aus dem sich aber alle Beteiligten bedienen und die Entscheidung darüber im Moment treffen können. Oder sie haben andere, gute Ideen auf die ich nicht gekommen wäre, das möchte ich auf keinen Fall einschränken! Daher haben wir viel Probezeit im Vorfeld eingeplant, sodass alle ein Gefühl für die Stücke bekommen und sie aktiv mitgestalten können.

Von der Klangästhetik schließt es ein bisschen an meine Close Up-Produktion an: Eher leise und transparent, kammermusikalisch würde ich sagen. Und es ist wieder kein Bass dabei, dafür mit Bertram ein großartiger (Akustik-)gitarrist, der mit seinem Instrument ein zusätzliches perkussives Element hinzufügt. Michael, Luise, Sebastian und Johannes sind auch alle Musikerpersönlichkeiten die ich sehr schätze, die eine eigene, besondere Stimme am Instrument haben und sich super gut auf ein Ensemble einstellen können. Die können auch gemeinsam einen sehr klaren, leisen und kompakten Sound erzeugen und das ist genau das was ich mir vorstelle. So wie auch Leif, er ist ein super aufmerksamer Schlagzeuger der unglaublich leise und trotzdem energetisch spielen kann, er war auch schon bei Close Up dabei und kennt meine Musik sehr gut.
Also für mich insgesamt eine absolute Traumbesetzung! Ich freue mich sehr auf das Konzert und die Aufnahme und ich bin froh dass die Initiative Musik der Bundesregierung dieses Projekt ermöglicht hat!“

The Constantin Krahmer Septet is his current project, with whom he is recording an album in the days following the concert, and about which he says the following:

"So far I've always written for smaller bands, trio, quartet, quintet, but somehow it's been tempting me to compose for a medium-sized ensemble. Something that is not yet a "large ensemble" or a smaller big band, but where all the musicians can still have a large say in the music without it becoming confusing.
The septet is a very good choice: four wind instruments, for example, can create great colours and textures together, and at the same time the instrumentation is still manageable, you still have an overview and can react spontaneously. And that's very important to me: I want to give my fellow musicians maximum freedom, my compositions should be like a reservoir of musical text, melodies, polyphonic passages, ideas, etc., from which all the participants can help themselves and decide at the moment. Or they have other, good ideas that I wouldn't have come up with, I don't want to limit that in any way! That's why we have planned a lot of rehearsal time in advance, so that everyone can get a feeling for the pieces and actively participate in shaping them.

In terms of sound aesthetics, it's a bit like my Close Up production: Rather quiet and transparent, chamber music-like I would say. And again there is no bass, but Bertram is a great (acoustic) guitarist who adds an additional percussive element with his instrument. Michael, Luise, Sebastian and Johannes are also all musical personalities that I really appreciate, who have their own special voice on the instrument and can adapt super well to an ensemble. They can also produce a very clear, quiet and compact sound together and that is exactly what I have in mind. Like Leif, he is a super attentive drummer who can play incredibly quietly and yet energetically, he has also been with Close Up and knows my music very well.
So for me, all in all, an absolute dream line-up! I'm really looking forward to the concert and the recording and I'm glad that the Initiative Musik der Bundesregierung has made this project possible!
