Sara Decker hat für ihr drittes Album Expand langjährige Vertraute ins [LOFT] Studio eingeladen, um ein facettenreiches Werk zu schaffen. Mit ihrem dritten Werk knüpft die Sängerin und Komponistin einerseits an frühere Erfolge an, andererseits schreibt sie ein neues Kapitel ihrer schon einige Jahre währenden Karriere, die teils in New York verlief und international Beachtung gefunden hat. „Deckers’ refreshingly new voice shines with clarity and glows with an inner light“ lobte NYC Glissando 2017, im gleichen Jahr wurde Decker nach einem Auftritt beim Montreux Jazz Festival mit dem zweiten Preis der Shure Montreux Jazz Competition ausgezeichnet. Bereits vorher gewann sie den European Jazz Award beim italienischen Festival Tuscia in Jazz. Und 2021 notierte das österreichische Magazin Concerto: „Sara Deckers helle, klare Stimme ist eine Ohrenweide, die fein gesponnene Begleitung […] ein Hochgenuss.“

In Expand reflektiert Decker persönliche Erlebnisse und Gedanken. „Mit jeder Produktion komme ich näher an meinen eigenen Sound“, so Decker. Das Album vereint klare Melodien, komplexe Harmonien mit rhythmisch komplexen Pattern.
Neben Sara Deckers warm timbrierter Stimme, die mit melodiöser Eleganz leichtfüßig durch Oktaven springt, setzen feinsinnige instrumentale Soli der Musikerinnen immer wieder individuelle Akzente. Heidi Bayers meist samtig intonierte Begleitungen und ausdrucksstarken Improvisationen unterstreichen einmal mehr, warum sie zu den viel gefragten Künstlerinnen an Trompete und Flügelhorn zählt – speziell natürlich in Accomplices, einem Duett mit Decker. Yuhan Su, ursprünglich aus Taiwan und seit Jahren in New York zuhause, wechselt mit feinem Gespür zwischen harmonisch-schwebenden, rhythmischen und weiter ausholenden Vibraphon-Einsätzen, beispielhaft zu hören in It’s Safe Here. Die finnische Bassistin Kaisa Mäensivu kann ebenso klug und Song-dienlich grundieren wie wendig solieren, Mareike Wiening bereichert die Musik durch Grooves und pointierte Breaks.

Der Albumtitel Expand signalisiert die Ausdehnung der Band zum transatlantischen Quintett und assoziiert unterschwellig Deckers erneut gewachsene Souveränität als Sängerin, Songschreiberin und Bandleaderin mit internationalem Profil. Zwischen avanciertem Pop und Vocal Jazz bietet ihr stilvolles und eindrückliches neues Werk verschiedene musikalische Anknüpfungspunkte: lockende Melodien und instrumentale Detailschärfe, rhythmische und harmonische Finessen, unaufdringliche Leichtigkeit und Tiefgang.

Multi-layered songwriting in a finely woven jazz guise

For her third album Expand, Sara Decker invited long-time confidants into the [LOFT] studio to create a multi-faceted work. With her third work, the singer and composer builds on her earlier successes while also writing a new chapter in her career, which has already spanned several years, partly in New York and has attracted international attention. “Deckers’ refreshingly new voice shines with clarity and glows with an inner light” praised NYC Glissando in 2017, the same year Decker was awarded second prize at the Shure Montreux Jazz Competition following a performance at the Montreux Jazz Festival. She had previously won the European Jazz Award at the Italian festival Tuscia in Jazz. And in 2021, the Austrian magazine Concerto noted: “Sara Decker’s bright, clear voice is a feast for the ears, the finely spun accompaniment […] a delight.”

In Expand, Decker reflects on personal experiences and thoughts. “With each production, I get closer to my own sound,” says Decker. The album combines clear melodies and complex harmonies with rhythmically complex patterns.
Alongside Sara Decker’s warmly timbred voice, which leaps light-footedly through octaves with melodious elegance, the musicians’ subtle instrumental solos repeatedly set individual accents. Heidi Bayer‘s mostly velvety accompaniments and expressive improvisations once again underline why she is one of the most sought-after artists on trumpet and flugelhorn – especially, of course, in Accomplices, a duet with Decker. Yuhan Su, originally from Taiwan and at home in New York for many years, alternates with a fine sense between harmonically floating, rhythmic and more expansive vibraphone entries, exemplified in It’s Safe Here. Finnish bassist Kaisa Mäensivu can provide a clever and songful foundation as well as agile solos, while Mareike Wiening enriches the music with grooves and pointed breaks.

The album title Expand signals the expansion of the band into a transatlantic quintet and subliminally associates Decker’s renewed sovereignty as a singer, songwriter and bandleader with an international profile. Between advanced pop and vocal jazz, her stylish and impressive new work offers various musical points of contact: enticing melodies and instrumental detail, rhythmic and harmonic finesse, unobtrusive lightness and depth.
